Malcolm Brown 1957 - 2026

The club are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Malcom Brown, following a brave fight with cancer.

Malcolm joined Hayes in the early 1990s, having previously played at Furnice Withy. As an Old Askean, he quickly found kindred spirits in Peter Askew and Steve Walker, and it wasn’t long before he became a valued part of the Hayes family. His father‑in‑law, Ron Strugnell, was already well established at the club, making Malcolm’s transition an easy one. He soon proved himself as a successful batsman in our 2nd XI.

In the Play‑Cricket era alone (since 2000), Malcolm recorded 2,723 runs for the club—a total that would be even higher if his performances from the 1990s were included. He captained the 2nd XI for four years in the mid‑2000s, and although he brought his 2nd XI career to a close in 2013, he continued to support the 3rd XI, 4th XI and Sunday 2nd XI until 2018.

After his playing days, Malcolm remained deeply involved behind the scenes. He served as Club Secretary, later Chaired the club, and continued to help with scoring and umpiring. His warm, unmistakable smile can be seen in photos celebrating with the 1st XI after their premier league win at Beckenham in 2022.

Malcolm was often spotted on the outfield lending Jon a hand, or sweeping the wicket between innings—a consummate club man in every sense. His dedication to the changing room project was instrumental, helping secure the necessary funding and ensuring the work was completed smoothly.

He was one of the select few honoured as Life Members of Hayes.

We were fortunate to spend time with Malcolm at the club’s Christmas Social last December.

As our Chairman, Pete Askew, said in announcing Malcolm’s passing: “Above all, Malcolm was a genuine, lovely man who will be greatly missed by all who knew him.”

Our thoughts, prayers and heartfelt condolences go to Tracey, Greg, Danielle and their families.

Arrangements will be posted shortly.
