Club Vice President Given Out

The Club is sad to hear of the passing of a Vice President – Ron Strugnell (12.4.30 -7.6.25)

Ron joined Hayes in the early 1990’s to reconnect from a cricketing perspective with his lifelong friend Don Ritchie. Whilst Ron didn’t play for Hayes he became heavily involved in the social scene and also, as a number of our current players (in the above photograph) will remember, was actively involved in the coaching of our juniors on a Sunday morning. Ron loved watching both Senior and Junior cricket at Hayes.

To say he enjoyed the social scene is an understatement. Ron loved music and to dance and was an ever present at the summer balls, dinner dances and presentation dinners over the years. His washing up sessions during the long cricket weeks were legendary

Before Hayes, Ron had a long cricket career playing for a number of different clubs including Mountsfield (who he formed with Don Ritchie) and Lewisham Wanderers amongst others. Ron was a hard hitting, top order batsman and right arm swing bowler.

The picture below, was taken at the re-enactment of an early Hayes cricket match against our near neighbours Bromley Common. Sadly, most of the others in the shot are now departed.

Ron’s funeral will be held at 10.00am on Monday 7th July at the Bluebell Cemetery, Knockholt, followed by a celebration at the Hayes Cricket Club (from about 11.45am). If anyone is interested in attending either the funeral, celebration or both please could they let Malcolm Brown know by either e-mail at malcolmbrow@tiscali.co.uk or WhatsApp on 07787117881.
