RIP Tony Caldwell and Richard Powell

We have received the very sad news that two of our past members have passed away recently.

Tony Caldwell, 79, who played for Hayes in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s passed away in Liverpool and would be known to many of that era – he and his wife Jeanne were great supporters of the club and spent many a happy time with us.

Alan Cotton and Jake Randell remained close to the family after they moved to Yorkshire with Tony’s work commitments and will be representing the club at the funeral in Liverpool.

Richard Powell, 63, passed away suddenly last week and his death comes as a great shock to many of us, who last saw him at the funeral of Peter Ashworth.

Richard, whose father Dennis was a regular at Hayes, and who passed away only a few years ago in his 90’s, played for Hayes as a youngster – also playing for West Wickham Football Club, a path well-trodden – family took Richard to the Tunbridge Wells area and he continued his cricket career at Tunbridge Wells and continued playing – he played a number of games for Penshurst just this past season.

Richard always kept a keen interest in Hayes and spent many an hour with our former President, Garth Cooper, watching the trials and tribulations of the county.

Garth writes, “Richard loved all sport and particularly club membership (Hayes, Tunbridge Wells and HSBC), the belonging, the banter and the history of it all. Tunbridge Wells CC will be a quieter place without him.”

A keen sportsman, tributes have also been made by Rusthall FC, where Richard helped coach the youth teams.

We send our condolences to both Families – the club is poorer for their loss.
